कभी किसी ने सोचा था कि एक भारतीय entrepreneur दुनिया की सबसे बड़ी messaging app का मुखिया बनेगा? 22 जून 2026 को जब Meta ने यह ऐलान किया कि CRED के founder कुणाल शाह अब WhatsApp के global head बनेंगे तो पूरे Indian startup ecosystem में एक अलग ही उत्साह फैल गया। यह सिर्फ एक job change नहीं है — यह उस पूरी journey का नतीजा है जो एक आदमी ने ₹1 million की अपनी पूँजी से शुरू की थी।
पहले समझो यह deal है क्या
Meta ने CRED में $900 million यानी करीब ₹8,550 करोड़ का निवेश किया है। यह investment primary और secondary share purchases के combination से की गई है जिससे Meta CRED में minority investor बन गई है। इस निवेश से CRED की valuation $4.5 billion यानी करीब ₹43,239 करोड़ आँकी गई है।
यह deal सिर्फ पैसों का खेल नहीं है। इसके साथ एक बड़ी शर्त भी है — CRED ने साफ कहा है कि Meta को customer data तक कोई access नहीं दिया जाएगा। यह बात इसलिए ज़रूरी थी क्योंकि CRED के पास करोड़ों users का financial data है और उसकी privacy सबसे बड़ी चिंता थी।
कुणाल शाह की journey — ₹1 million से $4.5 billion तक
कुणाल शाह ने खुद X पर अपनी पूरी journey share की। 2015 से 2018 के बीच उन्होंने FreeCharge से exit किया, कुछ वक्त learning और investing में बिताया और फिर एक सवाल पर अटक गए — “क्या trust को reward नहीं किया जा सकता?” इसी सवाल से CRED का जन्म हुआ।
2018 में CRED की शुरुआत हुई — एक ऐसा platform जो लोगों को credit card bills समय पर भरने के लिए reward देता था। उस वक्त लोगों ने कहा था कि यह idea काम नहीं करेगा। आज वही CRED payments, lending, insurance, commerce और wealth management तक पहुँच चुकी है।
2019 से 2025 के बीच platform पर 17 million active members जुड़े। कंपनी ने global investors से $900 million से ज़्यादा जुटाए, कई employee stock buybacks किए और 2026 में पहली बार profitable quarter report किया।
WhatsApp की कमान अब किसके हाथ?
Will Cathcart जो लगभग सात साल से WhatsApp का नेतृत्व कर रहे थे वो अब step down कर रहे हैं। वो Meta के अंदर ही एक नई role में जाएंगे जहाँ वो next-generation products build करेंगे।
कुणाल शाह WhatsApp के पहले Indian CEO बनेंगे। वो Bengaluru से Meta के headquarters Menlo Park, California शिफ्ट होंगे। मेरे हिसाब से यह shift सिर्फ geography का नहीं बल्कि एक पूरे mindset का है — एक Indian builder अब global scale पर सोचेगा।
Mark Zuckerberg ने कहा कि कुणाल शाह ने CRED को “India की सबसे important technology companies में से एक” बनाया है और उनके पास “builder mentality और global perspective” है जो WhatsApp को चाहिए।
CRED का आगे क्या होगा?
CRED में strategy और finance की देखरेख करने वाले Miten Sampat अब interim CEO का कार्यभार संभालेंगे। कुणाल शाह operations से हट जाएंगे लेकिन shareholder के तौर पर जुड़े रहेंगे।
CRED का board और leadership team लंबे समय की management structure पर काम कर रहे हैं। नया capital CRED के payments, lending, insurance और wealth businesses को grow करने में लगेगा। साथ ही कंपनी IPO की तैयारी भी कर रही है।
WhatsApp के लिए यह deal क्यों ज़रूरी थी?
India WhatsApp का सबसे बड़ा market है जहाँ 500 million से ज़्यादा users हैं। WhatsApp के globally 3 billion से ज़्यादा users हैं। इतने बड़े Indian user base को monetize करना Meta की सबसे बड़ी priority है।
Meta चाहती है कि WhatsApp सिर्फ messaging तक सीमित न रहे बल्कि payments, commerce और business communications में भी बड़ी भूमिका निभाए। और India में यही सब बड़े पैमाने पर होने की संभावना है। कुणाल शाह जो खुद एक fintech founder हैं उनका experience इसी काम में सबसे ज़्यादा useful होगा।
Investors और Startup World के लिए क्या मतलब?
यह deal कई मायनों में खास है। पहली बात — एक Indian founder पहली बार किसी global tech giant की सबसे बड़ी product की कमान संभाल रहा है। दूसरी बात — कुणाल शाह 250 से ज़्यादा companies में angel investment कर चुके हैं और Y Combinator में part-time partner भी रहे हैं। यानी उनका network और experience दोनों ही global level के हैं।
तीसरी बात जो सबसे दिलचस्प है — यह deal बताती है कि अब global companies Indian founders को सिर्फ local market के लिए नहीं बल्कि global leadership के लिए भी choose कर रही हैं।
